NHS Nurses to embark on strike after 106 years.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN), which represents almost 500,000 nurses, declared the strike action in its first UK-wide strike action in its 106-year existence.

The RCN confirmed that nurses employed at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) and St Luke’s Hospital, will be on strike.

According to Sky News, the union announced that several of England’s largest hospitals will go on strike, while others “narrowly missed” the legal turnout requirements necessary for action.

NHS Nurses Vote To Strike

The union stated that all NHS employers in Northern Ireland and Scotland would be covered, as would all but one in Wales. Other unionised health employees, such as ambulance drivers, hospital porters, and cleaners, are voting on strike action over compensation.

“Cutting nurses’ earnings by 20% since 2010 is the polar opposite of providing ‘substantial assistance’ for nurses, and the Cabinet Office Minister should not disrespect our members by claiming it is,” an RCN spokeswoman said.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay called the nurses’ strike vote “disappointing”.

“It is unfortunate that some RCN members opted for industrial action,” he tweeted.

“We adopted the independent NHS Pay Review Body’s recommendations in full and have awarded almost one million NHS staff a pay increase of at least £1,400 this year, on top of a 3% increase last year.” “That’s why boosting the NHS and social care workers to care for patients is one of my priorities, and we have already hired 30,000 of the 50,000 more nurses we pledged by 2024.” However, union requests for a 17.6% salary increase are about three times what millions of individuals outside the public sector generally earn, and they are simply not realistic or feasible.
