Kaycee Madu: A Historic Appointment as Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Solicitor General
Kaycee Madu, a Nigerian-born lawyer, has made history by being appointed as the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General of Alberta, Canada. This milestone is significant not just for Madu, but for the entire African community, as he becomes the first African to hold this prestigious position in Alberta, a moment described as a “strong statement” by Alberta’s Premier, Jason Kenney.
A Trailblazing Appointment
Madu’s elevation from his previous role as Minister for Municipal Affairs to Minister of Justice marks a historic moment in Canadian politics. According to Premier Kenney, Madu’s appointment is timely, especially as society becomes increasingly aware of racial prejudice. Madu brings a “needed perspective” to the justice system, shaped by his own experiences with racial discrimination.
“At a time when we are all more sensitive to the reality of racial prejudice, I think it is a strong statement that Alberta will have its first justice minister of African origin; first Black Canadian justice minister, attorney-general, or solicitor-general,” Kenney remarked. Madu’s personal experience with racial prejudice positions him uniquely to drive change within Alberta’s justice system.

Professional Journey and Impact
Since migrating from Nigeria 15 years ago, Madu has built an impressive career in Canada. He studied law at the University of Lagos and was called to the bar in the early 2000s. In 2005, he and his wife, also a lawyer, moved to Canada, where they established Tisel Law Office, a firm dedicated to providing high-quality, client-focused legal services.
In addition to his legal practice, Madu has garnered extensive experience in public service in Alberta. He has served as a senior technical advisor for the Government of Alberta, focusing on legislative and regulatory reviews, public policies, and stakeholder consultation. His contributions were recognized in 2009 when he received the Premier’s Award of Excellence, a prestigious accolade for superior service in Alberta’s public sector.

A Role Model for the Black Community
Madu’s appointment is celebrated by many, including Dunia Nur, president of the African Canadian Civic Engagement Council. She lauds him as a role model for the Black community, noting that his legal expertise and active involvement in the African community make him well-suited for his new role. “Historically, these are positions that have been occupied by white men who have no understanding of the disproportionate impact of the justice system on Black communities,” Nur stated. Madu’s presence in this role signifies a powerful shift towards more inclusive representation.

Advocacy and Vision
Madu is not only a legal and political figure but also an advocate for social justice. He has spoken out on issues such as the Biafran War, remembering the millions of lives lost and the impact of state policies like starvation. His advocacy extends to economic policies as well, as he recently campaigned against tax increases during the pandemic, emphasizing the need to ease the financial burden on businesses and citizens during these challenging times.
A Humble Leader with a Clear Mission
In his statement on Facebook, Madu expressed deep humility over his new appointment. He is committed to ensuring that Alberta’s justice system is fair, accountable, and representative of all citizens. Reflecting on his career, Madu emphasized his lifelong commitment to fighting for justice and equality, a commitment that will guide him as he takes on this new challenge.
“My fundamental belief that every soul deserves equal access to justice has always informed my legal work, and that will never change,” Madu affirmed. His leadership in this role is expected to bring about significant reforms, including a review of Alberta’s Police Act, ensuring that the justice system evolves to meet the needs of all Albertans.
Kaycee Madu’s historic appointment is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and vision for a more just society. As he steps into this new role, he carries with him the hopes of many who seek a more equitable and inclusive justice system.
